The pantry unit guide for Indian kitchens: what actually survives atta, oil and monsoon
Buy a tall grocery unit with independently opening solid-bottom drawers running on 50–60 kg rated slides, built in 710-grade BWP plywood or HDMR, and refuse the wire-basket pull-out that your modular vendor has quietly slipped into the base package. That single decision separates a kitchen that still works in year seven from one that starts sagging by the second Diwali.
I have designed close to 300 kitchens across India in the last twelve years, everything from a 5’6″ straight-line kitchen in a Andheri 2BHK to a 22-foot double-island villa kitchen off Sarjapur Road. The storage element clients get wrong most often is the tall unit. Not the chimney, not the countertop. The tall unit.
Here is why, and what to buy instead.
The wire basket trap
Almost every quotation you receive for a modular kitchen in India includes a “tall unit with 6 wire baskets” as a headline feature. It photographs beautifully. It fails in an Indian kitchen for two mechanical reasons.
The first is spillage. Our dry rations are fine-grained and constantly decanted. Rai, methi dana, haldi, loose moong dal, broken bits of dry red chilli. Every one of those falls straight through a 40 mm wire grid and lands on the basket below, or on the shutter track, or on the floor. Cleaning a six-tier wire tower means emptying all six tiers.
The second is load behaviour. A single-frame tall pull-out carries every basket on one common frame and one pair of runners. When you want one bottle of oil, you drag out 90 kg of groceries. The lever arm at full extension is brutal, the frame develops a droop, and the shutter starts kissing the adjacent cabinet within about eighteen months.
The Gurugram case, and what fixed it
A client in Sector 65, Gurugram, was firm about wanting the classic wire tall pull-out. He had seen it in a display showroom and liked the industrial look. I put my objection in writing and built it.
Six months later he sent me photos. Turmeric and mustard had worked their way down through all four upper baskets and settled in a fine yellow film on the bottom tray and the plinth. Worse, two 5 kg atta bags plus a 10 kg rice drum had been living in the lowest basket, and that basket’s runners had visibly splayed. The frame no longer returned square, so the shutter sat about 4 mm proud on one side.
We stripped it out and rebuilt the same 450 mm carcass as a five-drawer tandem inner-drawer tall unit. Solid steel bottoms, soft-close, 60 kg rated runners on the two lower drawers, and cut-to-size acrylic mats inside each drawer. Spills now sit in one tray and get wiped in ten seconds. The heavy grain drawer carries its own load on its own slides instead of hanging off a common frame. That kitchen is now four years old and the drawers still close flush.
Pro tip: if a vendor cannot tell you the load rating of the runner he is quoting, in kilograms, he is quoting an unbranded runner. Ask for the model name and look it up in the Hettich, Hafele, Blum or Ebco catalogue before you sign.
Start from your ration list, not from a catalogue drawing
Standard tall unit shells in India come in 450 mm and 600 mm widths, occasionally 300 mm and 900 mm, at 2100 mm or 2400 mm height, with a carcass depth of 580–600 mm. Those are fixed. What is not fixed, and what nobody plans, is the internal clear height of each drawer.
Measure your actual containers before the drawer heights are frozen at the factory. Here is what I check on every project:

A sensible 2100 mm tall unit for a family of four ends up as roughly two shallow drawers (150 mm) on top for masala and small packets, two medium drawers (250 mm) in the middle for dals and grains, one deep drawer (350 mm) at the bottom for atta and oil, and a fixed shelf above eye level for the things you touch twice a year.
The four mechanisms, compared honestly

Note the middle row. A tandem inner-drawer tower costs more per unit than the wire tower, but it is the only option where the weight of your rice never touches the hardware carrying your haldi.

Load ratings: the number that decides everything
Do the arithmetic once and the choice makes itself. A 600 mm bottom drawer in an average Indian household routinely holds a 10 kg atta drum, a 5 kg rice bag, a 5 litre oil can at about 5.5 kg with packaging, and two or three miscellaneous packets. That is 22–26 kg of contents. Add the drawer box itself, roughly 3–4 kg in steel, and you are asking a runner pair to carry close to 30 kg, dynamically, several times a day, at full extension.
A 30 kg rated runner is therefore running at its ceiling from day one. It will work. It will also start dropping at the nose within two or three years.
Runner classes you will actually be quoted in India:
- 30 kg class: Ebco value drawer slides, entry Hettich InnoTech configurations, most unbranded “soft close” slides. Fine for masala drawers and cutlery. Not for grain.
- 40–50 kg class: Blum Tandembox, Hettich InnoTech Atira in the higher rating, Hafele Alto. The sensible middle for medium drawers.
- 60–80 kg class: Blum Legrabox with heavy-duty runners, Hettich Quadro V6 / Actro, Hafele Nova Pro Scala in heavy configuration. This is what goes under the atta drawer.
Two more specifications to insist on. Full extension, so the back of a 550 mm deep drawer is reachable without you leaning into the cabinet. And synchronised runners, so the drawer does not rack sideways when you load one end heavier than the other, which is what always happens with a rice bag.
Weight warning: “soft close” and “heavy duty” are marketing phrases, not ratings. A slide can be soft-close and still be rated 25 kg. Get the kilogram figure written into the quotation, per drawer, before payment.
Material: the part that decides whether you are rebuilding in year five
Indian kitchens are wet and greasy in a way that European kitchen catalogues do not account for. We wash floors daily, we boil and steam without a lid half the time, our exhaust runs at high load, and in Mumbai, Kochi, Kolkata or Goa the ambient humidity crosses 85% for weeks together.

Two site checks that cost nothing. Ask to see the ISI 710 marking on the ply edge rather than a sticker on the face, and ask whether the ply is borer and termite treated, which matters enormously in Bengaluru, Chennai and most of Kerala.
Pro tip: spend your material budget on the carcass, not the shutter. A gorgeous acrylic shutter on a particle board carcass is a kitchen that looks perfect and quietly rots from inside. Nobody sees the carcass, and the carcass is what fails.
Solid trays or wire baskets: settle it here
- Solid steel or acrylic-bottom drawers stop mustard, haldi, rava and dal from migrating between tiers. One spill, one drawer, one wipe. This is the entire argument, and it is enough.
- Wire baskets breathe better, which is a genuine advantage for onions, garlic, potatoes and unrefrigerated vegetables. Keep exactly one wire basket in the unit, at the bottom, dedicated to vegetables, and make every other tier solid.
- Removable acrylic or silicone mats inside each solid drawer let you lift, wash and slide the mat back rather than scrubbing the drawer box. Get them cut 3 mm smaller than the internal drawer dimension.
- Ghee, oil and pickle containers belong on a solid tray with a raised lip. Oil that seeps into a wire basket joint never fully cleans out, and it collects dust into a sticky film.
- Avoid the tall unit directly beside the hob. Minimum 450 mm from the burner edge. Radiant heat plus oil vapour ages the shutter finish and the runner lubricant faster than anything else in the kitchen.
Monsoon, fumes and keeping the tower dry
This is the part standard modular kitchen blogs skip entirely, and it is the part that decides whether your dals stay usable in July.
- Do not back a tall grocery unit onto a shared bathroom wall or an unplastered external wall. Seepage moves through masonry and shows up as a musty back panel. If the layout forces it, insist on a 12 mm gap between carcass and wall, and get the wall waterproofed first.
- Specify a 6 mm BWP back panel, not 3 mm. The thin back is where cheap units bow inward under load and lose their squareness.
- Use an aluminium or SS plinth, 100–150 mm high, with the leveller legs in PVC. A ply plinth sitting on a floor that gets mopped twice a day is a failure waiting to happen.
- Silica gel sachets and dried neem leaves in the grain drawers do real work between June and September. Replace the silica every monsoon.
- Give the top of the tall unit an air gap or a proper filler to the ceiling. A dead pocket above the unit collects grease and becomes the hardest surface in the kitchen to clean.
- Run the chimney at high speed for the full duration of tadka, not just after. Oil aerosol that settles on shutters converts into a yellowish film in about six months on laminate and even faster on high gloss.
Placing the tower in your layout
- L-shaped kitchen: put the tall unit at the far end of the shorter leg, away from the work triangle. You reach it before you start cooking, not during.
- Parallel kitchen: keep it on the dry side, on the same run as the fridge, so the wet zone stays uninterrupted.
- U-shaped kitchen: it goes at the mouth of the U, never inside a corner where a full-extension drawer will foul the return wall.
- Straight-line kitchen in a 2BHK: a 450 mm tall unit at one end is usually all you can afford spatially. If even that does not fit, convert the two tallest base units into deep drawers instead and use the upper wall units for bulk stock.
- Clearance: a full-extension drawer needs its own depth plus about 750 mm of standing room. Check this against your kitchen door swing before finalising the drawing, not after the carcass arrives.
What it costs in India, realistically
Rates below are for a 450 mm wide, 2100 mm high unit in a metro, fully fitted, as of this year. Tier 2 cities run roughly 10–20% lower.

Budgeting rules I give clients verbatim:
- Hardware first, finish second. A ₹60,000 unit with 60 kg Hettich runners and a plain laminate shutter will outlast a ₹90,000 unit with acrylic shutters and 30 kg no-name slides.
- Buy heavy runners only where the weight is. There is no reason to put a 70 kg slide under a masala drawer. Mix ratings drawer by drawer and save ₹8,000–12,000 per tower.
- Check the hardware warranty separately from the kitchen warranty. Blum and Hettich offer lifetime or long-term warranties on the mechanism itself, but only against the original invoice. Get that invoice in your name.
- Do not pay extra for the shutter to be one piece. A 2100 mm single shutter warps more easily than two stacked shutters, and costs more.
The checklist before you sign the quotation
- Ply grade written as IS:710 BWP on the quote, not “waterproof ply”
- Runner brand, model and kg rating listed per drawer
- Full extension confirmed in writing for every grain drawer
- Internal clear heights of each drawer specified in mm, matched to your own dabbas and drums
- Back panel 6 mm minimum, plinth in aluminium or SS
- Hinge count on tall shutters: three minimum per shutter, four on anything over 1200 mm
- Edge banding thickness: 2 mm PVC on exposed edges, not 0.8 mm
- Site measurement after civil work is complete, not before tiling
- Written clearance that the unit sits at least 450 mm from the hob and not against a shared bathroom wall

The mistakes I see most often
Clients buy the tallest unit their ceiling allows and then discover the top 400 mm is functionally unreachable without a stool, so it fills with empty appliance boxes. Plan the top shelf for genuinely dormant storage and stop pretending it is usable.
They place the grocery tower on the far side of the sink, so every trip for salt crosses the wet zone. They accept “soft close” without a kilogram figure. They put atta in a wire basket. And they spend on a quartz countertop upgrade while cutting the runner budget, which is exactly backwards, because the countertop will look identical in ten years and the runners will not.
Get the drawer heights matched to your own containers, get 60 kg under the atta, get BWP under everything, and the tall unit will quietly do its job for a decade while the rest of the kitchen gets refreshed around it.
